Local Encounters & Living Traditions
Meet the people who keep Slovakia’s traditions, crafts and landscapes alive.
Some of the most memorable moments in Slovakia do not happen at famous sights.
They happen around a workbench, in a garden, on a sheep farm, beside a beehive or while walking through a landscape with someone who knows its stories.
These half-day and full-day experiences can be added to a longer Zuvium journey or built into a private day in their own right.
- Meet the Shepherd: Working sheep farm & cheesemaking
- Meet the Beekeeper: Bees, honey & local tradition
- Meet the Glassmaker: A living craft in the workshop
- Meet the Gardener: Permaculture, food & rural life
- Stories of the Tajchy: Walk the landscape with a local expert.
- Thermal Bath and Historic Hammam
Meet the Sheperd
Spend time on a real working sheep farm in the Javorníky foothills and meet the people who still live with the rhythm of the flock, the seasons and the mountain landscape.
This is not a staged folklore stop. Guests visit a working farm, meet the people behind it, taste what is made there and get a sense of why shepherd culture still matters in Slovakia today.
Depending on the season and the daily work on the farm, you may see how the flock is handled with the help of sheepdogs, learn how fresh sheep cheese and bryndza are made, taste farm products and enjoy an easy walk through the surrounding meadows. A regional lunch can also be included, with dishes such as halušky or other local specialities.

Meet the Glassmaker
Step inside a family-run glass workshop in the White Carpathians, and meet the people keeping one of the region’s oldest crafts alive.
Glassmaking here is not presented as a museum piece. It is still a working craft, passed on through generations and shaped by skill, heat, timing and years of experience. The Breznický family founded their glassworks in 2010 and continue the tradition of handmade Czech glass in a region where glassmaking has deep roots.
During the visit, guests can see how glass moves from raw material to finished object, mixed, melted, gathered, shaped, blown, cooled, ground and decorated and hear directly from the people who work with it every day.
What you can experience
- Meet a master glassmaker and learn about the family workshop
- Watch traditional hand-blown glass being shaped by hand
- See different stages of production, from melting and blowing to grinding and decoration
- Blow your own piece of glass under the guidance of the glassmaker
- Hear how the craft has changed, and what it takes to keep it alive today
- Discover the connection between glassmaking and the White Carpathian region
- Browse or purchase locally made glass pieces directly from the workshop
Possible additions
- Combine the visit with a White Carpathians walk or another local cultural stop
- Build it into a full-day route linking craft, landscape and regional food
Duration: Around 1.5 – 2 hours
Can be extended to a half day as part of a broader White Carpathians experience.

Meet the Gardener
At the end of a quiet valley in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Lenka created her dream home surrounded by forest and a flourishing permaculture garden.
Walk through the garden with Lenka and discover a more natural way of growing food while hearing the story of how a shared dream slowly turned into reality. Walk the Tajchy with a Local Expert
Around Banská Štiavnica lies a remarkable network of historic reservoirs, channels and water tunnels known locally as tajchy.
Created from the 16th century onwards and developed especially in the 18th century, this sophisticated water-management system was built to collect and move water for the mines and became one of the most advanced systems of its kind in the world. Today, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.
The tajchy are now woven naturally into the landscape and local life, places for walking, swimming and quiet time in the hills but their real story is easy to miss without someone who knows what to look for.
Explore them with Michal Červeň, a Banská Štiavnica water-management specialist and expert on the historic tajchy system. Walking through forests, alongside old channels and beside the reservoirs, he explains how water shaped the mines, the town and the surrounding landscape, and reveals details most visitors would simply pass by.

What you can experience
- Walk beside historic tajchy and water channels
- Discover how the UNESCO-listed mining landscape was shaped by water engineering
- Learn how the system powered mining and influenced the development of Banská Štiavnica
- Hear the stories behind features that are easy to miss without local knowledge
- Explore the landscape with a specialist who has studied the tajchy for years
Duration: Half day
Can be extended to a full day with Banská Štiavnica, a longer walk, lunch or another local experience.

Thermal Bath & Historic Hammam
Trenčianske Teplice has one of Slovakia’s most distinctive spa traditions, built around naturally warm sulphur-rich thermal water that has been used here for generations. One of the most authentic ways to experience it is the Sina thermal bath, a traditional thermal pool fed directly by the spring.
The experience can be combined with time in the adjoining historic Hammam, an ornate Moorish-style bathhouse completed in 1888 and still used today as part of the spa experience.
What you can experience
- Soak in the naturally warm Sina thermal bath
- Rest in the historic Hammam
- Learn about the town’s long spa tradition
- Add a spa-town walk, massage or another treatment
Duration: Around 1.5–2 hours
Can be extended to a half day with lunch, a walk through the spa town and park or additional wellness treatments.
Real life comes first.
These are genuine working farms, workshops, gardens and local environments, not staged attractions. Some experiences therefore depend on season, weather and the availability of the people involved. If something is not possible during your visit, we will suggest a thoughtful alternative with the same spirit.
